Hani killer stabbed in prison by inmate

Chris Hani was killed by Janusz Walus

Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus has allegedly been stabbed in prison. The Department of Correctional Services said he was receiving medical attention. "The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) can confirm an unfortunate stabbing incident involving inmate Janusz Walus. A detailed incident reported is to be provided at a later stage but what can be stated at this point is that inmate Walis is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care," said a statemnt. The stabbing comes at the back of him being granted residency in the country by the Department of Home Affairs. This means he will serve the rest of his parole in South Africa.Walus assassinated the South African Communist Party (SACP) leader  in 1993. After Walus was granted parole by the Constitutional Court last week there was speculations that he would be going back home to Poland. This was because his citizenship in the country had been revoked in 2017.

CLEAR BETRAYAL

Home Affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that he granted Walus citizenship on condition that he may not use any travel document or passport issued by the embassy of Poland. "The letter addressed to Walu? and a certificate of exemption have been forwarded to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to be delivered to Walu?. He will remain here because if he leaves he will not be bound by the ConCourt's judgment in his country." News of Walus' release sparked outrage in the country with political parties such as the EFF and the ANC Chairperson claiming it was insensitive and a clear betrayal

ADHERING TO THE RULES OF HIS PAROLE

Walus has been in prison for the past 28 years and previous attempts to let him out failed. Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said the decision to keep Walus in the country was to ensure that he adhered to the rules of his parole for the remaining two years. He said in Poland, his homeland he would not have the same restrictions because South Africa does not jurisdiction that side. Hani's widow Limpho Hani said the decision to release Walus was diabolical and karma would hit those involved. On Thursday a prayer session will be held in Pimville, Soweto for the Hani family.
