Four killed in shootout with police following botched hijacking

Police confiscated vehicles belonging to suspects after a fatal shootout in Midrand

Police have shot dead four suspects and arrested two in an alleged foiled hijacking ofa truck transporting electronic devices in Midrand on Wednesday. 

 

STOPPED IN THEIR TRACKS 

Police had responded to a tip off and an operation was set in place. The multidisciplinary team comprising the Special Task Force, NationalCrime Intelligence, Gauteng Traffic Saturation unit, Bad Boyz Security and members of the Hawks' Tactical Operations Management Section was involved in the operation. Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale said the suspects' cars were spotted on Olifantsfontein road in Glen Austin on Wednesday morning. When the suspects realised that they had been cornered, they started shooting at the police. "A high-speed chase as well as shootout ensued. Four suspects were fatally wounded, and two others suffered minor injuries which were attended to on scene," said Colonel Mogale. 

 

RECOVERED 

 

Mogale said the police recovered two unlicensed firearms at thescene, and the four vehicles used by the suspects have questionable originswhich are under investigation. She added that the suspects will appear in courtsoon. The suspects were planning to hijack a truck couriering electronic devices.
