The family of a two-year old boy who was allegedly shot and killed by a neighbour wants answers as to why the suspect was released on bail without their knowledge on Wednesday. Luyanda Mthethwa was killed while playing with other kids at the neighbour's house two weeks ago.
FAMILY DISAPPOINTED BY THE LAW
Luyanda's uncle, Mvelo Mpungose from Umlalazi in Eshowe in the north of KwaZulu Natal, told ZiMoja that the family was angry and disappointed by the South African judiciary system after the neighbour was released on bail. "This is what I call injustice. The is pushing us to take the law into our own hands. That man shot and killed my nephew when he was drunk, and he tried to hide the body in the nearby bushes. I'm fuming and if I meet the guy in the streets, all hell will break loose. Our government and their laws are criminal friendly," said the fuming uncle.
THE DEVASTATING INCIDENT
Mpungose said that on the day of the incident, he was at home when he received a call informing him that his nephew had been shot. "When I enquired from the neighbours how the incident happened, I was informed that the child was playing in the suspect's yard and the guy was playing with his gun. It accidentally went off and my nephew was shot dead. The man was allegedly seen trying to remove the bullet from the boy's body," Mpungose added. He was caught by another neighbour trying to dump the boy in the bushes and alerted the community. It's alleged that the boy was still alive and crying when begging the man to take him to his mother as he was in pain. Mpungose added that all they need now is for the National Prosecuting Authority and the police to explain to the family on why the suspect was released without their knowledge. "We want to know how the suspect made bail when the gun is also unlicensed," he said.
THE MOTHER NOT COPING
Mpungose said Luyanda's mother, Thandeka Mthethwa is not coping with her son's death, especially because he died in her arms. "It will take time for my sister to heal from this. She is not well, and she needs counselling to deal with this ordeal. I wish that the guy can spend years in jail for killing my nephew and trying to dump him in the bushes to die," he said. Luyanda was buried last weekend.
