The family of a woman who was allegedly killed by the father of her children blames the police for her murder. This is after the man was arrested after he tried to kill Nolifa Mzobe on January 11 but was released the same day only to kill her a week later.
SURVIVING TWO DEATH ATTEMPTS
Nolifa's sister Senamile Khathi fromDududu in Mzinto in the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal said her sister survivedtwo murder attempts a week before she was killed.
On January 11, the suspect Kwanda Zungu allegedly strangled Nolifa. Later that same day, he tried burning her in side the house, but she managed to escape. The police were called, and he was arrested and charged with attempted murder. "Nolifa and the kids were then taken into a place of safety while the police were still searching for Zungu. She was there for a few days when she heard that he was arrested. She then decided to return home as she felt safe with him in jail,' Kathi added that the investigating officer who was investigating the case did not inform her sister that the suspect was released the same day he was arrested.
FAMILY DEMAND ANSWERS
Khathi said that they need answers on why Zungu was released without her sister's knowledge. She also said that they want the SAPS to arrest the people who freed Zungu after a case of attempted murder was opened. "We want answers and I will never rest until the policeman who freed Zungu is held accountable. We were never briefed about him appearing in any court or having a bail hearing except hearing a word on the street that he was out, and he was looking for Nolifa. SAPS must tell us how the suspect was released without going to court after he had tried to kill my sister," she said.
THEIR RELATIONSHIP
Khathi told ZiMoja that the two's relationship was always good, and he never abused her until last year. "They have been dating since they were in grade 7 and we were all shocked when he started abusing her. I wouldn't say he was a monster; we are all still shocked by what Zungu did to my sister,' Khathi added. After the attempt on her life, Khathi says her sister wanted to leave the father of her kids because of the abuse. "She was killed because she wanted to end her relationship,'
Zungu was arrested last week Friday and appeared before the Sawoto Magistrate court on Monday facing charges of murder. The case was postponed, and he was remanded in custody. Nolifa will be buried in Dududu on Saturday.
