EFF claims the police have warned them of IFP plotting to assassinate their secretary-general

EFF claims the IFP is plotting to assassinate their secretary-general Marshall Dlamini

The end of a coalition government between IFP and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu Natal has turned ugly with allegations of a plot to assassinate the red berets leader in the province. The EFF claims SAPS intelligence in KZN has warned them of a plot by IFP senior leaders to kill their secretary-general Marshall Dlamini as they believe that he is solely responsible for the initiation of motions of no confidence against IFP Mayors in several KZN municipalities.

HISTORY OF VIOLENCE

EFF has, on many occasions made claims that IFP used force and stubbornness to get things done in KZN. EFF national spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said in 2014 and2016 they've had to deal with ill-mannered IFP members during meetings with their top leadership. She said they will not take the police warning lightly because they know what IFP is capable of. "The EF condemns with contempt the plots to assassinate our SG or any of our leaders. The province of KwaZulu Natal has been defined by many political assassinations for a very long time, a habit which the EFF has never associated itself with," said Mathys.

GIVE AND TAKE

Mathys explained that they respect the IFP's decision not to support the establishment of EFF governments in different municipalities in the province and that is the reason they decided to vote out IFP governments wherever they previously voted for them. "For this we don't expect the IFP to resort to violence because we are only returning the same behaviour, they've posed on us. We are all not in support of each other. We will not accept the use of violence and assassinations to settle political differences." she added.

ACHIEVING BIG NUMBERS IN KZN

Mathys said they've achieved big and unexpected numbers in KZN, and no number of threats will curtail their perpetual growth and prosperity. "We therefore call on South Africa's law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate those who are involved in the plot and arrest them immediately. Political parties will disagree from time to time but that does not mean that blood should be shed. We call on all EFF ground forces, regional, provincial and national to never retreat nor surrender to provocation or threats. The fact that there are threats on our leaders is clear indication that we are a force to be reckoned with."

IFP RESPONDS

IFP Gauteng Provincial Chairperson Bonginkosi Dlamini laughed off the allegations made by the EFF. He said they don't care about the EFF, its existence or any of the stunts they are pulling to remain relevant. "We have nothing to gain by killing Marshall; he is not even a factor. They are just angry and creating stories that don't exist. They are angry that we are retracting our support for them. As far as we are concerned it is a desperate distraction. We have tried to contact the Minister of police and SAPS to clarify this matter. The police cannot only approach the EFF, but they should also come to us as the accused." Dlamini added that their members should focus on the upcoming by-elections and deviate from entertaining anything brought forward by the EFFSAPS Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said :"The SAPS is not aware of any briefing to the EFF but in the main we do not discuss the safety, security and threat assessments of individuals in the public domain."
