KwaZulu Natal became the most improved province in terms of their matric pass rate in 2022. The province which was hit by the worst floods in history claiming the lives of more than 450 people improved their results by 6,2 %, higher than any other province. According to the Department of Education, KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng contributed 127 968 Bachelor passes, an improvement of 8.9% increase from 2021.

KZN Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said that they were proud of the class of 2022, who are their shining stars. "As a department we are excited, yet very humbled by these results. This is the work of the collective, led by the executive authority and the Head of Department. We are the biggest, yet the largely rural province, yet we were able to achieve this feat,' Mlotshwa said.

CHALLENGES
Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said that Gauteng and KZN contributed the most in bachelor passes. Addressing the nation Motshekga said faced with floods and load shedding, the class of 2022 class was the most resilient. "The increase to 80.1% marks the second highest since 2019. Out of the 2022 matric class, 278, 815 students achieved a bachelor's pass, 197,357 (26.7%) achieved a diploma pass and 14.9% (108,159) achieved a higher certificate. This class faced significant challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, starting in their grade 10 year in 2020. This signals that the education system is incrementally dealing with concerns," she said.
