Popular Durban singer and actor Zuluboy is said to have been tipped for the position of an MEC for Arts, Sports & Recreation in KwaZulu Natal. This, according to sources will happen if his party, uMkhonto weSizwe, emerges as the leading party in the KZN polls and takes control of the province.
TIPPED FOR A BIG POSITION
The party is currently leading in the polls in the province with 43.62% over the ANC's 18%. If the party take over the province and appoints the rapper, he will make history by becoming the first artist to hold a position as a Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) in the country. Zuluboy, real name Mxolisi Majozi, has been at the forefront of promoting the newly formed MK Party along with other celebrities Ernest Msibi, Khulu Skenjana and Felix Hlophe to name a few. They created the uMkhonto Wesizwe Creatives, a group of intellectual artists influencing policies of governance in South Africa. "We came together as artists fighting the Copyright Amendment Bill as it had the fair use clause. We then campaigned as the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party. We believe our party is the only one that will help artists and, in this country," he told ZiMoja in an interview early this week.
HIGHLY CONTESTED PROVINCE
?The IEC has completed just over 57 % vote count in the province and if the margins are anything to go by, MK Party will be the new governing party in the hotly contested province which would have changed hands three times since the 1994 general and provincial elections. The Inkatha Freedom Party initially held power in the province in 1994 but lost it to the ANC in 2004. Now, the relatively new MK Party has managed to win the support of the people of KZN and secure the province during this year's elections.
SUITABLE CANDIDATE
According to a source close to Zuluboy, some influential politicians in the party are pushing for the rapper and actor to become the MEC because he understands the industry better than anyone. According to the source, he will likely take the position because of his background in the entertainment industry. "He understands the struggles faced by artists and musicians in the province. "He was always fighting for the rights of fellow artists, and when he openly supported uBaba Zuma, he gambled with his career because the ANC, IFP, DA, and ActionSA were not going to hire him for their events," said the source. The source added that Zuluboy became one of few celebrities to not only endorse, but join, MK earlier this year when others did not want to be associated with it. Zuluboy was also one of the organisers of the MK Party's election rally held on May 18 at the packed Orlando Stadium, which was addressed by its President Jacob Zuma. Zuluboy said he is flattered but has nothing to say at the moment. "I can't comment at the moment it will come across as if I am campaigning for myself," MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela did not respond to our calls and texts.
