The corruption case against former Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa and his co-accused, Jehan Mackay, has been postponed after the duo briefly appeared briefly at Palmridge Magistrate's Court today. The matter was postponed to the 24th of October for the Director of Public Prosecutions to make a decision on Mackay, requesting that the charges against him be dropped.
DPP TO FINALISE DECISION
Mackay had previously made representations to have the fraud and corruption allegations against him dropped. Kodwa's legal representative, Zola Majavu, explained: "On the last occasion, there was an indication that Mr. Mackay made representations, which were turned down. He then sought to escalate those to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions). Thursday we were then informed that the DPP required a period of two weeks to finalise his decision."
BRIBERY
It is alleged that Mackay paid bribes to Kodwa, amounting to R1.6 million, between April 2015 and February 2018 in the form of cash, luxury accommodation and other gratifications in exchange for government contracts. During his court appearance last month, Kodwa told the court he was considering a separation of trials due to further delays in his corruption case caused by his co-accused. Kodwa's defence Majavu expressed frustration over the continuous delays. "Every single day that passes, the prejudice. real or perceived regarding my client is significant. Wherever he goes, he's a skelm who's taken some money corruptly. We are ready. We want our day in court," Majavu said.
