GAUTENG: The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced Bongiwe Magwaza to 20 years for the murder of her boyfriend, Kgopotso Ntsana (34), who was a police officer. The 23-year-old also received an additional seven years for unlawful possession of a firearm, five years for unlawful possession of ammunition, and seven years for defeating the ends of justice, which will be served concurrently with the 20 years. Magwaza was convicted of stabbing and shooting her partner during a dispute at their shared residence in Windmill Park Estates on 2 December 2022. After stabbing and shooting her boyfriend Magwaza went to sleep at her other boyfriend's place. Initially, she reported the incident as suicide but police investigations and an expert witness testimony contradicted the claim. Magwaza later confessed to the crime, claiming self-defence, which was accepted by the court.
GAUTENG: Fourteen suspects aged between 26 and 51 appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court yesterday for charges related to operating illicit gold processing facilities in Eikenhof. The group was arrested on Tuesday following an operation by law enforcement after several complaints from the community about illegal activities at the house they were operating from. The suspects, who are all Zimbabwean nationals, face charges of illegal possession of unwrought precious metals as well as contravention of the Immigration Act and Environmental Act. Police recovered tonnes of soil with gold bearing material valued at over R2.5 million, which was removed from the scene by the South African Diamond & Precious Metals Regulator.
LIMPOPO: The police in Limpopo arrested three men aged between 27 and 30 for stock theft at Rossenekal and Stoffberg. The police were conducting an operation when the suspects were found transporting nineteen goats with a bakkie while on their way to an auction. Preliminary investigations revealed the goats were stolen around Rakgoadi village and the owner was notified after the goats were identified through a brand mark.
KWAZULU-NATAL: A man was killed while another was left in critical condition following a drive-by shooting in a residential complex in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Wednesday. According to members of the KZN VIP protection services, two Indian males were shot multiple times and one was declared dead on the scene while the other was rushed to the hospital. Multiple spent rifle cartridges were found scattered across the roadway. Circumstances leading up to this incident have not been confirmed at this stage.
