If you were around in the 90s and early 2000s, you would know how popular Kwaito 90s supergroup, Trompies, was. They are making a strong comeback in the music scene and taking people to the good old days. This past weekend the band performed in London where they were headlining a show on Saturday. However, the hit-makers were minus another member. Zynne "Mahoota" Sibika, who is part of house duo, DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota. He was nowhere to be seen.
MAKING A COMEBACK
The travelling party to the United Kingdom were Jairus "Jakarumba" Nkwe, Mandla "Spikiri" Mofokeng and Eugene Mthethwa. Another member, songwriter and performer, the late Mjokes Matsane died two years ago.
After the success of the group in the early 2000s, the group members have been pursuing solo careers with Eugene wastaking an unexpected careeer in politics as a member of the ANC, working in the office of former President Jacob Zuma, until last year when he joined the EFF. A few months ago he was elevated to the Member of Parliament in Cape Town. But it seems that their fate has changed and they are taking the world by storm again and recently performed in the UK, 11 years since they last performed there.
NOT PART OF GROUP IN YEARS
According to Zimoja source Mahoota has not been performing with the group in years, to a point that they don't even bother inviting him to their gigs.
?He is just there in principle but not physically, even fans forgot he is part of the group,? said the source.Another source said the other members apparently considered replacing him but they decided against the idea.
Another source said there has not been any chemistry between Mahoota and his childhood friends because things were bad for the group, Mahoota was flourishing. When called for comment, Mthethwa said Mahoota is busy with his own projects - their times always clash.
?Mahoota has not performed with us in years, he?s always busy so it would unfair for him to drop his busy schedule. Most of the time he is fully booked,?
Asked if he would be replaced, he said, "Although he hasn?t performed with us in a while, we haven?t replaced him."
