Community takes matters into their own hands after an unroadworthy vehicle hits learners

Learners were hit by a car outside their school

The community KwaNqetho Village outside Durban in KwaZulu-Natal took the law into their own hands when three learners were hit, allegedly by an unroadworthy vehicle last week Wednesday. The learners were standing outside the Hlahlidlela High School when the driver of the car lost control after the brakes failed.

THE ACCIDENT

It is alleged that the community became angry when they realised that the car was driven by a foreign national, who owns a spaza shop in the area who had no drivers licence and that the car had no brakes. The community attacked him, but he was quickly rescued by the police and teachers who pleaded with the locals not to take the law into their own hands.

MOB JUSTICE

A community member who spoke to ZiMoja on condition of anonymity said that they wanted to beat him so bad. "What made us even more angry was the fact that his car was not roadworthy, and he is not legible to drive, and he did it anyway risking lives," he said. KZN Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi confirmed the incident saying that it was after school when some of the learners were outside the school along the road. "The principal left earlier, and he received a call around 4pm, from one of the community members, informing him about the accident that involved the learners. The principal went to the scene and on his arrival, the children had already been taken to the hospital," he said. He said the learners were taken to RK Khan Hospital. "The learners are in a serious condition in hospital," he said.
