The community of Highflats, far south of KwaZulu Natal, is frustrated over their chief, whom they accuse of recklessly impregnating young women in the village. Chief Ngqalabutho Dlamini (32) is accused of impregnating five women from his village and not marrying them.
Dlamini, who is a son of the late Melizwe Dlamini, impregnated five women from his village and they have reported the pregnancies to the local traditional council. Dlamini took over the throne in 2021, shortly after his father passed away. "The chief is very wrong to behave like this as he is the leader of his people. We understand that he is still young and that he must make his own choices in terms of dating but he must respect his people and lead by example," a villager ,who did not want to be named, said.
The community member further said that Dlamini was taking advantage of the young women as they feel important that they are dating a chief. "He is no longer an ordinary person. He is suppose to take a wife and be off the market. The council must call him to order. He must stop sleeping around because he is promoting unsafe sex. Where have you heard of chief that sleeps around? That is reckless. He is now a leader and must lead in a respectful manner like his father Melizwe," an elder in the village said. Nhlangwini Traditional Council spokesperson Sipho Dlamini did not deny or confirm the allegations. "I don't comment on personal matters of the chief. The chief is the right person to talk to with regards to this matter," he said, adding that the chief had informed the family about his desire to settle down. "He wants to get married soon so that he can be respected in the community as the head of Nhlangwini people and the Dlamini tribal authority," he said. When Chief Dlamini was contacted for comment about the allegations he said, "Before I became a chief, I was living my life like an ordinary person. I do have kids with different women but that will soon change as I am planning on taking a wife. I will settle down and those kids will come stay with me in the Nhlangwini Royal House," he said.
