Zandie Khumalo grilled over her sobriety on the night of Senzo Meyiwa’s murder

Zandie Khumalo will be back on the witness stand this morning

Kelly Khumalo’s sister Zandie Khumalo faced cross-examinations from accused number two and three’s defence on day four of the resumption of Senzo Meyiwa’s murder trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. Advocate Sipho Ramosepele, who is defending Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi, two of the men accused of murdering Bafana Bafana goalie Senzo Meyiwa grilled Khumalo on how she managed to identify the accused even though she did not attend the identity parade of the accused.

HER SOBRIETY QUESTIONED

When asked about her sobriety levels on the night of the incident, Zandie maintained that she had a few drinks but that she was not drunk. "I was not drunk because I only had a few cans of cider," she said. Ramosepele questioned Zandie’s authenticity when it came to the identity of the accused. He asked Zandie if she ever gave a description of the accused when they were called to give statements again but she said there was no need to. " When I went into that room, others had already given their descriptions. That’s why I never contributed anything. There was nothing else to add," she replied.

COULDN’T IDENTIFY THEM

Ramosepele played a TV interview where Zandie was speaking on eNCA in July 2022 discussing the murder. "In that video you said, they were wearing masks and you couldn’t identify them. When you say they were wearing masks, who are you referring to," he asked. Zandi replied: "I was referring to the accused." But Ramosepele asked which accused specifically, But Zandie pointed out, "Remember advocate, at the time, it was at the height of Covid-19, everyone was wearing a mask. I’m referring to one of the accused who are before the court." Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are on trial for premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. The trial continues.
