Ten years ago, former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana player Senzo Meyiwa was gunned down at his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's house in Vosloorus on the East Rand. He was shot when two intruders allegedly entered the house and robbed them of their belongings. He died while Kelly was driving him to the hospital. Among those in the house was Chicco Twala's son, Longwe. A decade later, no one has been convicted for his murder and the suspects who have been arrested claim they are being framed.
HIS FATHER DIED WITHOUT JUSTICE
His father, Sam Meyiwa, who was at the forefront of advocating for justice for his son's death, died in 2019 without being granted his wish. The case has seen many postponements throughout the years, and it is still going on at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where five men are on trial for the late soccer star's murder. The star's fans have, throughout the years, expressed their frustration with the case moving at a snail's pace and for the case to be moved expediently.
DEFENCE ATTORNEY PASSES AWAY
The trial has been adjourned to January 2025 as one of the defendants, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, is currently without legal representation following the death of his lawyer advocate, Thulani Mngomezulu. Mgomezulu, who has been representing Sibiya since last year, passed away a week ago after an illness. Mngomezulu had been on sick leave and watching the proceedings at home as per the judge's instructions. He was buried over the weekend. Last week, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng said the trial cannot move forward until Sibiya finds a new legal representative. Mokgoathleng said Sibiya should consult his family who have been financing his legal expenses but the accused said that his family was already struggling to pay the legal costs. "You have a choice to make, which you must act upon. I won't sway your decision and I cannot dictate your course of action, but you have the right to either represent yourself or to engage another defense attorney," Judge Mokgoathleng said. The judge also advised Sibiya that Legal Aid South Africa is ready to help him if he files for financial support.
