A teenager is among those who were arrested yesterday after the Hawks discovered a drug lab in Boltonia, Krugersdorp West. Seven men and two women were arrested after the Hawks discovered what a drug lab worth millions suspected to be operational on a factory scale producing massive numbers of drugs.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation team received a tip off about an alleged operational drug lab. "Upon further investigation members came across a dilapidated factory where they found an assortment of methamphetamine producing chemicals in large quantities. During the search of the premises, nine suspects, including two females, were apprehended, "she said. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It takes the form of a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol. It also causes increased activity and talkativeness and decreased appetite.
CHARGES
Mogale said the suspects are facing charges of manufacturing illicit drugs and will first appear in court today before the Krugersdorp Magistrates Court. At the beginning of February, the South African Police Service destroyed cocaine, heroin, mandrax and cannabis valued at more than R500 million confiscated in raids in Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and Free State. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said this is an attempt to tackle drug trafficking.
