Five suspects have been shot dead in Mpumalanga

Five suspected ATM bombers were fatally wounded in a shootout with the police and private security officers in the early hours of this morning. The incident took place in Witbank in Mpumalanga.

POLICE ACTED ON A TIP-OFF

Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said the task team composed of the Hawks, the police's Special Task Force, and security officers of a private security company followed up on information received regarding an ATM bombing planned in the Witbank area. "Information was operationalised, leading the team to Schoongezicht, where the group was reportedly converging at an alleged safe house. The multi-disciplinary team was strategically posted to look for the white Toyota Hilux received in the intelligence information. The identified vehicle was spotted driving out from the area and when the team attempted to stop the vehicle, suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued, "Mogale said.

The police recovered an R5 rifle, a hunting rifle with a scope and three 9mm pistols, as well as explosives, from the scene. "The bakkie in which the suspects were travelling is subject to further investigation," said Mogale. Hawks boss Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya commended the work of the task team. "A call is made to potential robbers to withdraw from such activities, as these behaviours always attract dire consequences. The team shall always be on alert."
