ANC regional chairperson and City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has opened a can of worms by suggesting that foreign nationals be hired as Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers to fight crime in the country's economic hub. This is despite the high unemployment rate in the country. Now the youth of Soweto are planning a march to Morero's office to seek employment.
MARCHING TO THE MAYOR'S OFFICE
Kim Baloyi, who is mobilising the youth, told ZiMoja that they will be marching to Morero's office to hand over their curriculum vitae to the mayor tomorrow. "It's clear that Morero has exhausted all his resources searching for young candidates suitable to become JMPD officers, hence his suggestion of hiring foreign nationals. So, since we are the ones who are seeking employment, we will take ourselves to his office to drop off our CVs. Our government is good at overlooking South Africans and undermining us. When you come to Soweto, Monday is as good as a weekend," Baloyi said. He added that the government clearly has jobs but isn't considering South Africans. "Morero doesn't even have two minutes in office, yet he has already proven that he does not have the best interests of South Africans at heart. If he is not for us then he should not be in that office," concluded Baloyi.
FIGHTING FOR THE YOUTH
Thabang Moloi, who calls himself the people's president and was a member of Nhlanhla Lux's Soweto Parliament, said parents need to gather and fight for the future of their children. Moloi said it seems like the ANC leadership has started being arrogant and adopting similar tactics to those of the EFF. He added that the EFF membership is declining daily because they are advocating for foreign nationals. "How arrogant is Morero for implying that he will hire foreign nationals in our government when we have thousands of young people consumed by drugs because they are unemployed? The youth must never allow this to happen in our country. As parents, we need to mobilise and fight for our kids; they can't be sidelined, and should we discover that there is a foreign national who is a JMPD, hell will break loose," he said. The gathering point for the march will be at Thokoza Park in Rockville, Soweto, tomorrow at 10AM.
Chris Zondo from the mayor's office said they are aware of a video circulating on social media about a planned march.
"No one has formally communicated anything with the mayor's office about a march taking place. However, the mayor is lively to the fact that people have a democratic right to express themselves in whichever way, not forgetting the bylaws that come with such," said Zondo.
