The sixth child, who was in the ICU for a week after allegedly consuming suspected poisoned snacks in Naledi, Soweto, has passed away. Seven-year-old Katleho Oliphant's passing was confirmed at the mass funeral of his five friends who died last week Sunday. It's alleged that the children fell sick and changed colour after they ate chips called brown dash, reportedly bought from a local spaza shop.

MASS FUNERAL

The funeral service of the five children who passed away last weekend is currently underway at the Naledi Community Hall, where hundreds of families, school children and political leaders gathered to bid farewell to the kids. Isago Mabote (7), Njabulo Msimango (7), Zinhle Maama (7) Karabo Rampou (8) and Monica Sathekge (6) died after allegedly consuming poisonous chips. Katlego's mother, Lydia, could not hold her tears as she related her story to ZiMoja on Thursday. Lydia said she came back from the hospital on Thursday morning to fetch essentials and was told by doctors that her boy was fighting for his life."He is fighting and in ICU. The doctors told me that the poison is coming out, but they can't tell me whether or not he'll be fine. They told me to pray," Lydia said then.

SPAZA SHOPS SHUT DOWN

Local councillor Lazarus Motha told SABC News that Katlego's family received a call while at the funeral service from the hospital to come quickly. "The mother has called me to inform me that Katleho has passed away this morning at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital," Motha aid. This week, community members looted the spaza shops and later shut them down, saying they were tired of having their kids die while no one was held accountable. Last year, in October, two kids died after reportedly eating toxic snacks bought from local spaza shops.
