The police in North West have confirmed the swift arrest of six suspects in connection to the mass shooting that occurred in Kanana and Freedom Park on Saturday. The shooting that took place at a tavern claimed the lives of eight people and left 12 critically injured.

SWIFT ARREST 

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said following a manhunt compromising of various law enforcement units, four suspects, who are all Lesotho foreign nationals, aged between 24 and 38, were arrested in Klerksdorp and Kanana Township, respectively. Mokgwabone said during the arrests, the police seized a Toyota Hilux Double cab bakkie and more than 82 rounds of ammunition of different calibers. "The suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates' Court on Tuesday," he said. In Phokeng, police arrested and detained two suspects, both aged 30, in connection with the Freedom Park murders. "One of the suspects, who is a taxi driver, allegedly gave the taxi to his friend. The taxi was ultimately used during the commission of the crime. Subsequent to the incident, the taxi driver allegedly removed the vehicle from the scene. He further failed to report the incident either to the police or the owner," said Mokgwabone.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended all members of the respective teams for their dedication and relentless efforts in ensuring the arrest of suspects within a short space of time after the ruthless incidents were reported. He cautioned that lawlessness will not be tolerated and that the service will not hesitate to mobilise resources to bring those responsible to book. The suspects are expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrates Court in Tlhabane tomorrow facing five counts of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
