A grade 12 teacher was found hanging in the school's sports grounds on Wednesday morning. According to reports, the teacher was found by caretakers at Hyde Park Secondary School in Gauteng. In another incident, a grade 11 learner from Jeppe Boys High died after a rugby match.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his sorrow over the incidents and sent condolences to the families of the deceased. Chiloane said that according to the information available, the educator was found hanging yesterday morning in the sports area of the school. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the scene by paramedics. "Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident," Chiloane said. In the second tragic incident on Tuesday, a Grade 11 male learner at Jeppe high school for Boys in Johannesburg died during a rugby match against Die Anker in Brakpan.
According to Chiloane, the learner was not feeling well after the match and paramedics on site tried to stabilise him and contacted an ambulance for further medical assistance. "Unfortunately, the learner succumbed shortly after the ambulance arrived. Our psycho-social support unit has been dispatched to both schools for necessary trauma counselling and support. We are grateful to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) for also availing their services for additional support at these schools," Chiloane said. "We are deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the departed, as well as their respective school communities," said Chiloane.
