The proceedings in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial ended early today at the Pretoria High Court when the matter was postponed to 2 October. This. because the defence needed more time to consult the accused on the photos that were downloaded from his three cellphones.
PHOTOS TAKEN ON THE NIGHT OF THE MURDER
Accused number 3 Mthobisi Mncube’s lawyer, Advocate Charles Mnisi, told the court yesterday that he could not continue cross-examining state witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, who placed the accused at a hostel in Vosloorus on the day Meyiwa was shot and killed. Mnisi said he wanted to see the photos downloaded from the accused’s three cellphones. This came after Zungu told the court that Mncube was wearing a lime t-shirt and a necklace on the night of the murder. However, in the pictures presented in court, the accused is wearing a beige top with no necklace. The defence then requested the master copy of the downloads and the cellphones. Cellphone expert Moses Mabasa handed over the master copy with 784 photos to the defence.
DEFENCE TO GO THROUGH PICTURES AND CONSULT ACCUSED
State prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi confirmed to the court that the state handed over the pictures. "There are about 784 photos. We went through all of them and we also made copies for the defence and we provided them with a memory stick," Baloyi said. The defence has requested time to consult and to go through the photos with their client. The defence will continue cross-examining Zungu on photos used to link the accused to the murder when the court resumes in two weeks.
