Court hears how accused number two was electrocuted to give confession

The Senzo Meyiwa trial continues today

Constable Wendell Jonathan was back on the witness stand yesterday to continue under cross-examination. Proceedings were cut short on Friday when Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu told the court he wasn't feeling well.

CROSS-EXAMINATION

Advocate Mngomezulu resumed his cross-examination of the witness by asking Jonathan about the pocketbook, which last week he told the court he no longer had since the SWAT unit was disbanded. At the time Jonathan and other SWAT members were responsible for escorting accused one and two, who are currently in a trial within a trial with the court scrutinising the admissibility of their confessions. Mngomezulu put it to the witness that the first time he met accused two, Bongani Ntanzi, was at a garage where they started torturing him in the company of Constable Mogane and Mabena. However, Jonathan denied this statement claiming he was never at the garage. Mngomezulu added: "You took the accused towards the stairs, where there was a steel post and you removed one handcuff from one of his hands and you attached it to the pole. There was a device that was used to electrocute the accused and he was electrocuted from his stomach. You, Mr Mabena and Buthelezi were taking turns using this device." Jonathan told the court that he had "no knowledge" of what Mngomezulu was talking about.

THE COPS WERE HEAVILY ARMED

Advocate Zandile Mshololo questioned Jonathan on Magistrate Viviene Cronje's testimony where she told the court about heavily armed policemen escorting the accused. Mshololo asked Jonathan about the men who were heavily armed. "My lord it was us, we were in full uniform. It was Constable Leisering, Constable Buthelezi, Constable Maphumulo, and, myself. I can only remember four names," said Jonathan.

Mshololo provisionally concluded her cross-examined pending evidence she requested. The trial resumes this morning at the Pretoria High Court.
