The police in Limpopo have arrested a 38-year-old security guard at the Jane Furse Mall for allegedly killing a suspected shoplifter.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police were called to a scene where a man died while in the custody of mall security because he was allegedly caught stealing on Wednesday. "Upon arrival, they found the deceased with multiple stab wounds. A preliminary investigation revealed that he was stabbed by one of the security officers during interrogation in the store room," Ledwaba said. He added that the police opened a case of murder and that the suspect was arrested at the scene after he was linked to the murder.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the actions of the guard and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. "It is unacceptable for security officers to break the law as they are our partners in the fight against crime. The suspect should have known better," said Hadebe. Ledwaba said the suspect is expected to make his first appearance at the Sekhukhune Magistrates Court on Friday on a charge of murder. Ledwaba said the identity of the deceased will also be revealed at a later stage.
