Heatwave to persist till Wednesday

Soaring temperatures will persist till Wednesday

The South African Weather Service has warned of heatwave conditions, resulting in persistent high temperatures in some provinces including Gauteng. Temperatures will be peaking at a high of 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

FIND WAYS TO STAY COOL

SAWS said the heatwave will also affect other provinces. "The heatwave with persistently high temperatures is also expected in places over the escarpment and Lowveld of Limpopo until Saturday, as well as over the central and eastern parts of the Free State and the North West, Gauteng, and over the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape," Forecaster Celeste Fourie cautioned residents to find ways to stay cool this coming week. "It's the basics of staying hydrated with non-alcoholic beverages, staying in the shade during the warmest times of the day. If possible, try to work in the shade. Don't stay near any appliances that will add to the heat that's currently persisting."

AVOID THE SUN

The City of Tshwane's emergency services spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, warned residents to take precautionary measures and avoid spending a lot of time in direct sunlight. "The city calls on residents to be aware of adverse effects that may be caused by extended exposure to extreme heat weather conditions. The effects may include dehydration, heat exhaustion in severe circumstances as well as heat stroke. Residents are also advised to remain cautious of the increased risk of veld fires during this period," Mashigo said.
