South Africans are yet to find out if Sunday will be declared a public holiday should the Springboks win the Rugby World Cup against the All Blacks on Saturday at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. The presidency said President Cyril Ramaphosa was still considering if his promise would be made official.
REQUEST TO BE CONSIDERED
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said they were receiving messages from South Africans around the world about the holiday suggestion. "The president has received a lot of messages in this regard via us and directly. South Africans from all walks of life have reached out to him. He said to me I must relay the fact that he's considering the request." Magwenya added that the President expects the country to retain the Ruby World Cup.
BOKKE FEVER
The Springok's last-minute victory against England last Saturday restored hope to many South Africans who were ready for the team to be defeated. In a quick turn of events celebrations were the order of the night. The President congratulated the Springboks on their semi-final win against England in a tweet posted shortly after midnight on Saturday. "Congratulations to our heroic Springboks on a hard-won Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final at Stade de France, Paris. Now our nation can focus our hearts and flags on our second successive Rugby World Cup Final in as many tournaments. We are indeed stronger and victorious together," read the post.
RAMAPHOSA TO SUPPORT SPRINGBOKS IN FRANCE
According to Magwenya, Ramaphosa will travel to Paris tonight to support the Springboks tomorrow in their quest to return the Webb Ellis trophy. "The President is really looking forward to being invited onto the pitch for a second time by captain Siya Kolisi to help lift the cup for the world champions. This will be the first time any country will hold four Rugby World Cup titles. The President wishes the Springboks and the All Blacks well for this showcase which we hope will be a memorable event for those who will be in the stadium as well as the global media audience that will be following the game," Magwenya said, adding that Ramaphosa will also pay the team a special visit at their hotel to deliver words of encouragement on behalf of the nation.
