Producers of the romantic comedy My Zulu Wedding have had legal and financial issues since they started filming in 2017, which spilt over to 2019 when they premiered. Eight years later, the battle is still ongoing. Brand Contract Consultants Ltd has officially filed legal documents with the Johannesburg High Court against Luju Pictures and Productions, who advanced them over R1.7 million for the making of the film.
UNSUCCESSFUL
The comedy starring Kelly Khumalo, Nondumiso Tembe, Pallanc Dladla, Darin Henson, and Kgomotso Christopher, to name a few, was released in cinemas in October 2019. Luju Pictures and Productions initially denied liability for payment on the basis that the COVID-19 restrictions were the cause of the unsuccessful launch.
BREACH OF CONTRACT
Brand Contract said Luju Pictures and Productions undertook to repay the borrowed money in instalments while awaiting the movie's release. However, an insider said the rest was meant to be paid once the film had premiered. "They only paid R162,000 in August 2016 and R100,000 in September 2018," he said. They were meant to repay the R1.73 million with interest from the release of the film. The funders have failed to get a repayment, which they stated was requested by the movie's creative producer, Lineo Sekeleoane. According to the documents seen by ZiMoja, Luju Pictures and Productions failed to make all agreed payments. Sekeleoane could not be reached for comment.
