In an incident that shocked the community of Isigodii Mid Illovo, in the south of Durban, a man allegedly shot and killed his mother and sister on Wednesday. As if that was not enough, the man allegedly beheaded them and dumped their bodies away behind their house.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident. "Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the double murder of his mother and his sister at their home in Sigodini (Kalusizi) in Mid Illovo on Wednesday afternoon. Police responded to reports of a shooting and upon arrival at the crime scene, bodies of an 87-year-old woman and her 39-year-old daughter were found lying in a pool of blood with their heads chopped off. A subsequent search inside the yard led to the recovery of the deceased heads which were stashed inside a pit latrine. The knife which was used to cut off the heads was also recovered," he said.

The shooting was witnessed by a 12-year-old girl who escaped who alerted the neighbours. Netshiunda said that the suspect was later arrested and was found in illegal possession of a firearm, believed to be the weapon that was used in the commission of the crime. He further said that he will appear in the Richmond Magistrate's Court today.
