Makubenjalo, a popular nightclub from Zone 2 Diepkloof in Soweto, was closed on Friday night because of non-compliance. The club is frequented by Gauteng's prominent politicians, media personalities and popular DJs. The Gauteng ANC used it as their meeting place before the May 29 elections and a venue for the Siyanqoba Rally after party.
ALCOHOL WORTH R400K CONFISCATED
The club was closed on Friday for operating without a liquor licence. Speaking to ZiMoja, local councillor Sthembiso Mashinini, said that the case against the club was opened by the relevant stakeholders. Mashinini said the Gauteng Liquor Board conducted an investigation into Makubenjalo and found compliance issues that led to a notice of closure. Contrary to speculation, the closure is not due to noise pollution but rather non-compliance with regulatory standards. He said his office had previously received petitions regarding compliance concerns. "While we understand the impact of job losses, we must emphasise that our country is governed by laws, not common sense. We cannot compromise on compliance. Every business must meet the required standards and those that don't will be held accountable by the relevant government departments," Mashinini said, adding that Soweto cannot have an "animal farm" situation where some businesses are exempt from compliance while others are held to account.
A source close to the situation told ZiMoja that they were all shocked when the police pounced at the establishment and confiscated liquor to the tune of more than R400,000.
NOISE POLLUSION
According to the South African Communist Party Soweto branch secretary, Mxolisi Ndabz kaMdluli, they have, on several occasions, as members of the community and the councillor tried to engage with the management on the issue of noise and non-compliance. "Because of arrogance and ignorance, the management ignored these concerns. Now the chickens have come to roost," KaMdluli said. He added, "We express our unwavering solidarity with the workers of Makubenjalo who lost an income because of the closure of the establishment. We put it clear that no one is to blame for this but the management of Makubenjalo," he said.
In a short statement, the club said they were only closed for trade on Monday. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will keep you informed of all the developments on our communication platforms." Attempts to get a comment from the establishment owner, Nhlanhla, proved fruitless as his phone was on voicemail.
