The Johannesburg Emergency Services will remain on high alert after heavy rain wreaked havoc and caused flash floods in the CBD, surrounding areas and Ekurhuleni yesterday afternoon. The South African Weather Services had issued a warning predicting scattered and thundershowers.
Videos and pictures doing the rounds on social media showed some roads in Gauteng that were flooded or with a large amount of stagnant water.
Some videos showed submerged vehicles and a wall of a house that collapsed on two vehicles. An alert was issued warning people not to take deadly risks. "We ask the community to please avoid unnecessary risks by using alternate routes instead of attempting to cross flooded roads and bridges they may come across. The unknown conditions can pose serious risks to life," the alert said.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation urged motorists to reduce speed, keep a safe following distance, have lights on and avoid crossing flooded bridges. "Motorists must also ensure that vehicles are in a roadworthy state. Lights, wipers, windscreens, brakes and tyres must be checked before the start of the journey," the entity warned Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi said the Jukskei River in Alexandra township was heavily flooded but there were no major incidents nor injuries. ?One vehicle is reported to have been trapped along Jukskei with some occupants. So far, no other incident has been reported in the city of Johannesburg. However, we remain on high alert,"
