Following the news of ANC stalwart Pravin Gordhan's passing this morning, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation held a press briefing to inform the public on funeral arrangements.

IT HASN'T BEEN EASY

Speaking at the briefing, one of Gordhan's daughters, Priyesha Gordhan, said they've faced attacks as a family as a result of both parents being struggle icons. "It was all very distressing for him. It wasn't his sole decision to stay in the public arena. He was told and asked by many different people to stay and to fight because the country needed him. My parents are both political activists and freedom fighters and as difficult as those attacks were, we knew my father was an incorruptible, honest man who had only ever served the public to the best of his ability," she said.

HE WAS READY

Speaking at the briefing, former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, who was succeeded by Gordhan, said he visited him in the hospital on Tuesday. "He looked at us and laughed and said: "Hey broers you are here. As you can see, the end is near." Manuel boasted about how Gordhan lived a life with no regrets for the path he chose for himself. "Right to the very end, Pravin was able to demonstrate the same determination. When PG took over public enterprises, the cupboards were bare; everything was stolen. The debt was high; look at the debt service costs for Eskom. The list is endless. He had to work with the hand he was dealt with and that context becomes quite important," added Manuel.

OFFICIAL FUNERAL

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced today during the signing of the BELA Bill that Gordhan is befitting of a state funeral and will be granted one. The former Minister will be buried next week Thursday in Durban, before a private cremation ceremony in line with his Hindu beliefs.
