Learners in KwaZulu Natal were released early from schools to allow them and teachers to get home safely as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued a warning of heavy rains in the province. Provincial Head of Department Nkosinathi Ngcobo issued the directive this morning, just a few hours after the schools had re-opened.

HEAVY RAINFALLS

"The province of KwaZulu-Natal has been experiencing various challenges in the recent weeks emanating from flooding. A number of communities have been seriously affected and some lost family members. Schools have been no exception in this regard," said Ngcobo, adding that according to the SAWS, KZN is likely to experience heavy rainfalls this afternoon. "As such, all principals are directed to release learners by 13h00. In the event that rain falls before the stipulated time, principals must exercise their discretions in line with the guidelines issued on 16 October 2023. In the same vein, all responsibility managers must release staff by 13h00 this afternoon," said Ngcobo.

LEVEL 5 WARNING

This morning, Disaster Management teams said they were on high alert following a Level 5 warning of disruptive rains. "Disaster management teams are on high alert and will be monitoring routes that are prone to weather-related incidents," KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, said. She further said that the affected areas are eThekwini Metro and the Districts of Ugu, Ilembe, King Cetshwayo and Mkhanyakude.

HELPFUL TIPS TO STAY SAFE

Here are the tips from COGTA on staying safe during heavy rains and floods:

Expected impact:

  • Widespread and disruptive rainfall: Significant rainfall accumulation is forecast, leading to potential flooding of low-lying areas, roads and bridges.
  • Flash flooding: Localised flash flooding is possible, posing a threat to informal settlements and communities near rivers and streams.
  • Strong winds: Strong winds could accompany the rainfall, causing damage to infrastructure and trees.

What to do:

  • Stay informed: Regularly monitor weather updates from the SAWS or trustworthy news sources.
  • Prepare for flooding: Clear drainage channels around your property and move valuables to higher ground if necessary.
  • Do not cross flooded roads or waterways: Never attempt to cross flooded roads or swollen rivers and streams.
  • Secure loose objects: Secure outdoor furniture and other objects that could become hazardous in strong winds.
  • Be ready to evacuate: If you live in a low-lying area or near a river, be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
  • Have an emergency kit in hand: Ensure you have an emergency kit stocked with essential supplies, including food, water, first-aid and medication.
  • Stay safe: Residents in the affected areas must take precautions and prioritise their safety.
