Late veteran actress dancing from her grave

Veteran actress Nomhle Nkonyeni must be dancing in her grave after a street in Gqeberha has been named after her. Her name will officially be unveiled today. Phumelele Zonela, from the Nomhle Nkonyeni Legacy Foundation says the initiative has taken five years to complete. "She approved everything while she was still alive and we are grateful to see this came to light," Phumelele says.


HER LEGACY LIVES ON


The street was formerly known as Aggery Road in New Brighton and will now be named after the veteran actress. "This is us showing that her legacy will continue to live on. The community has been nothing but supportive and we are grateful."

Nomhle was adored for her outspoken nature, fiery personality and passion for theatre and filmmaking. Her life was all about telling stories and she spent over four decades doing what she loved. Veteran actress, Nomhle Nkonyeni passed away in 2019 at the age of 77 years old due to heart complications.

 

ACCOLADES

 

With her tireless contribution to the world of acting, Nomhle starred in top productions such as Jahmil X.T. Qubeka's film,  Sew the Winter to My Skin and boxing film, Knuckle City. She played several roles such as Gaz'lam, IgaziZero ToleranceTsha Tsha, and Home Affairs to name a few. In 2019, she was awarded with the prestigious order of Ikhamanga in Silver by South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa for "excellence in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism or sport."
