It's the second day since Zandi Khumalo faced cross-examination at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. Zandi was questioned on the stability of Meyiwa and Kelly Khumalo's relationship after the defence of accused number 4 read to the court an unpleasant sms to the court.
Advocate Zithulele Nxumalo representing accused number 4 read out an sms from December 2013 that Kelly sent to Zandi about her relationship with Meyiwa. "I'm emotionally drained. I sometimes feel that Senzo brought a dark cloud in my life and I can almost hate myself for not succeeding in getting rid of him via sms and the sms would not go. I feel like God is deliberately sabotaging me by keeping this man in my life," advocate Zithulele Nxumalo read the sms in court. A second sms said: "All I can do is hope and pray that each day I'm getting closer to my days of being free from him," read the sms. Zandi told the court that like any other couple, Kelly and Meyiwa had their ups and downs. " I can't say exactly what was happening for my sister to send that sms but I know Kelly loved Senzo and Senzo loved Kelly", saying like any relationship the pair had good and bad days. Zandi further said that Meyiwa was dishonest or a cheater and that's why her sister was frustrated. "Senzo was not honest. He would be with Kelly and at times he would be with Mandisa and when he was with Kelly he would say this and when he was with Mandisa, he'd say that," says Zandi.
The defence for accused number 3 told Zandi that Meyiwa was killed during a lover's quarrel between her and her then-boyfriend, Longwe. "Firstly, Longwe and I were not fighting, we were in a very good space. For me to invite him to my home, that shows that we were on good terms." Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli were arrested in 2020 and charged with Meyiwa's murder, attempted murder of other witnesses, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition. The trial continues on Monday.
