Social media was abuzz when someone posted that they might have seen a person resembling girlfriend killer Sandile Mantsoe in Braamfontein Johannesburg recently. Sandile was sentenced to 32 years for murdering girlfriend Karabo Mokoena in what was reported to have been a possible "money ritual."

SERVING TIME IN STANDERTON

The Johannesburg High Court concluded that Sandile stabbed Karabo and tried to conceal the crime by burning her remains. Presiding judge at the time, Peet Johnson, labelled Sandile an "unreliable witness who fabricated evidence and was involved in a web of lies in a bid to sway the murder trial his way." The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed in a statement that he is still in prison serving time at the Standerton Correctional Centre with seven other charged offenders, making a total of eight in the cell. His next court appearance is on 18 October in the Evander Magistrates' Court for a case of fraud being investigated by the Hawks.

A CASE OF FRAUD

In August 2022, the Hawks found that the forex trader was linked to an investment fraud case in Mpumalanga, where in 2016 he recruited 180 people to invest more than R2 million for a high return. Dineo Sekgotodi, from Mpumalanga Hawks, said Sandile was the sole owner of the Trillion Dollar Legacy Investment Scheme which allegedly visited several government offices including the Department of Justice, municipality offices and the Department of Education where he recruited an estimated 180 investors to invest over R2 million, promising a return in investment. Sandile however did not pay the clients as promised and the victims.
