She is a renowned TV host on Moja LOVE's Traditional Wedding. But among her many talents, she is passionate about agriculture and issues affecting women in farming. For the last two years, Kamo Bombe (31) has been empowering young female farmers through her workshops titled, Farming in Heels, an initiative aimed at equipping women in the agricultural space with tools to tackle the male-dominated industry.
PASSION FOR POULTRY
Born in Moletji Ga-Mabitsela in Limpopo and raised in Diepkloof, Soweto, she learned farming from a young age from her mother and grandmother. "I learned farming as a way of surviving," she tells ZiMoja. "My mom and grandmother farmed tomatoes and we carried on the legacy in the big city. I started buying and supplying eggs, chickens, and atchaar to pensioners while they were queuing for their pension grants," she says. She attended a farming and poultry training course and learned about the different types of chicken to farm. "I learned how broilers are farmed for breeding and raised for meat production and layers for eggs."
FARMING IN HEELS
Bombe says Farming in Heels has been running for two years and that it returns for the third year. " We will host a one-day women's agricultural summit with a focus on creating an empowerment platform for South African women in agriculture," she says. She adds that the summit will focus on key areas in agriculture that will empower and enable women to participate in the agricultural economic value chain. "There is a quote that really reaches out to me that goes something like, 'If you teach a man to farm, his family will eat. If you teach a woman to farm, the community will eat' -It represents my life. It's so refreshing to see more women in the sector. It's also a great platform for women to learn about the opportunities that are available for them from different stakeholders," she said.
