KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has urged those who will be celebrating election results, as the IEC is getting closer to announcing them, to do so responsibly. He said the police will remain on high alert following the release of the election results to avoid violent incidents.
STILL ON THE GROUND
Addressing the media at the KZN Results Operation Centre at Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) , Mkhwanazi said police teams remain on the ground bearing in mind that some will be celebrating whilst others will be saddened by the election results which will cause tension.
"We as law enforcement anticipate that there are some who are not responsible who may celebrate and provoke others. We are also tracking intelligence and monitoring the province,"he said.
SPEAK TO YOUR PEOPLE
Mkhwanazi urged political party leaders to warn their supporters to celebrate responsibly and avoid any incidents that may incite violence and cause harm to others.
"We appeal to those who will emerge victorious to celebrate responsibly. Police will be out there to ensure that no law is broken during this period. Supporters of various political parties should avoid provoking others and those provoked should not respond but instead inform the police," he said.
