Rapper and TV personality Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye appeared briefly at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court today following his arrest on charges of rape, assault and attempted murder. Jub Jub handed himself over at Brixton SAPS in July after a warrant of his arrest was issued.
Jub Jub pitched draped in a maroon and white tracksuit with a traditional touch and waited calmly in the court gallery to be called on the stand.
Maroohanye’s lawyer Ntsako Baloyi said no amount of media exposure would take away his client’s innocence. "We are ready to proceed... we need to consult and take proper instructions. We don’t want to postpone and then one postponement will lead to the other. Therefore we will request for a lengthy postponement to the 8th of November which we believe that by the time we come back, all avenues would have been exhausted and we will keep in touch with the state. I’m ensuring the court that when we return we will proceed," Baloyi said. State prosecutor Agnes Bezuidenhout said she has furnished the defence with copies of the docket. "The state is ready to proceed to trial, however, we will not pose the lengthy postponement. The crime allegedly dates back to 2006 and he faces three counts of rape, two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault," Bezuidenhout said.
NPA CONFIRMS
The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane said as the state, they confirmed to the court that they have disclosed the contents of the docket and that they are ready to set a trial date. "The defence was given an opportunity to respond and their response was that they wanted to study the contents of the docket and decide if they wanted to proceed with the trial or they first want to exhaust mechanisms are available to them, one of them being lodging representations," Mjonondwane said. The charges came after comments the artist made on a podcast in 2021. Responding to Maarohanye’s comments on the show, the complainant accused him of raping and physically abusing her while they were dating. However, there are two other complainants in the matter also from the entertainment industry, a singer and a radio presenter.
