Joburg mayor says there are measures in place to deal with water leakages

COJ mayor Dada Morero said they are dealing with water leakages in the City

Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero said that he is aware of pipe leakages in the City leading to water shortages. He told the media earlier today that they've established a leak detection program that will focus on repairing damaged infrastructure.

MAKING PROGRESS

Morero said efforts have been made to fast-track the progress of dealing with the leaks. "One of our key initiatives is the advanced leak detection programme. This programme involves the deployment of noise loggers, which are embedded in pipelines to detect water leaks by identifying unusual noises in the system. As of January 2025, 125 noise loggers have been installed across the Central, Randburg, and Roodepoort regions, with more to follow," he said.

LEAKS AFFECT RESERVOIR LEVELS

Johannesburg Water expressed concern over the leakages, explaining that they have a dire impact on the reservoir levels. "By the end of April 2025, we expect to have completed the commissioning of these loggers and will install an additional 400 by June 2025. In addition to leak detection, Johannesburg Water is also focusing on pressure management to reduce water loss and ensure the efficient distribution of water throughout the city." Earlier in the week, Morero made headlines for allegedly paying influencers to sing praises about him. He has since denied any involvement in that and distanced himself. "There has never been an instruction from me around the issue of influencers. As I make it clear, I have never made an instruction on the matter," he said.
