SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has deployed a political killings task team to investigate the murder of an IFP councillor attached to the Nongoma Municipality in KwaZulu Natal. General Masemoa has also ordered the mobilisation of maximum resources to apprehend those behind the murder.
Duma was killed in Mtubatuba in the north of KZN and the gunmen went on to shoot randomly at a scholar transport, killing two learners and injuring two. According to the police, he was gunned down while attending to his car that had broken down on the road. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said a preliminary investigation indicates that Duma was ambushed along the R618 in Nongoma. " A group of armed men stopped next to his vehicle and shot the councillor multiple times, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The suspects then fired shots at a passing scholar transport taxi that was transporting school children. Four children were shot and wounded and two of them aged 11 and 12 years sadly succumbed to their injuries," Mathe said. Duma was recently elected as a councillor following by-elections in one of the wards in the municipality. He was killed near Ithendele coal mine where he had tenders to provide heavy plant services to the mine.
Last year September, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Political Killings reported that at least 52 councillors were killed in KwaZulu-Natal since 2011. The killings are blamed on ongoing battles for position and political influence especially within the ANC and the IFP in the province. The committee said at the time that of the 52 murdered councillors, 31 were from the ANC, 14 were from the IFP while four were from NFP. Police Minister Bheki Cele has previously said that murder cases that were reported before 2016 and 2021 local elections were mainly as a result of fighting over councillors positions.
