Former Soweto Gospel Choir lead singer battles with alcoholism

Crystal Tlali needs help to be sober

The family of a former member of the Soweto Gospel Choir who has been seen in several viral videos grappling with alcoholism needs help to get her sober. This comes after videos of Crystal Tlali (38) went viral on social media with the songstress, renowned for her captivating and soul-stirring performances of the song Modimo Re Boka Wena, intoxicated.

SHE NEEDS HELP

Despite her remarkable talent, Tlali, who moved back home in QwaQwa in the Free State after she lost her job in Gauteng, is now the shadow of her former self. Her mother Manini Tlali (57) told ZiMoja that all she wants now is for her daughter to get help and be herself again. "She is a talented young woman who is good at what she does and I know that when she gets sober, she will be back to the daughter I know and also be able to take care of her son," Manini said. According to a family member who did not want to be named, they have exhausted all efforts to help her overcome this addiction, but nothing has helped so far and their last hope is a rehabilitation centre. "It is not nice to come back home after you have been a superstar star touring abroad. We need someone to help her as she wakes up early and starts drinking. She is a mere shadow of her former self,' adds the relative.

RECEIVING LOVE FROM FANS

After the video did the rounds on social media, fans and supporters have rallied together to spread the word and appeal for assistance. Few church leaders and famous DJs have reached out to her family offering their support. Tlali told ZiMoja that she is overwhelmed by love and support although she was initially embarrassed. "The support I have received has been tremendous and I am grateful for the love. I need prayers,' she said
