Mamelodi Sundowns have announced that Steve "Mhlekazi" Komphela will take over the reins as their new head coach. In a statement today, the club said that the former Moroka Swallows will serve as senior coach and assist Manqoba Mngqithi and the technical team.

EXCITED TO BE BACK

This comes after the club sacked Rhulani Mokwena on Wednesday, reportedly following a fallout with the Brazilians sporting director Flemming Berg over the signing of players at the club. Komphea said he was excited to be back at Chloorkop, where he says he was always inspired and treated with respect and love. "I am committed to contributing to the club achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African Continent," said Komphela. Komphela (57) joined Sundowns in October 2020 as a senior coach to work alongside joint head coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena. He left the club in July 2023 after he had a fallout with Mngqithi and took up a coaching job at the now defunct Moroka Swallows.

RESHUFFLING

Before leaving the team last year, Komphela was named the Brazilians' first-team coach as part of a technical staff reshuffle that saw Mokwena promoted to sole head coach and Mngqithi redeployed as senior co-coach. Mamelodi Sundowns is currently training for the upcoming season and will be leaving in a few days for Austria as part of its pre-season preparations.
