Disgraced former Speaker of Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has handed herself over to the authorities at the Lyttelton Police Station in Tshwane this morning. This follows allegations of R2.3 million in bribes and gratifications from a fraud-accused businesswoman who reportedly received R210 million in defence contracts.
Just before 6am the SABC which had been camping outside the home of Mapisa-Nqakula reported that there was activity and speculated that she was going to hand herself over to the police. An hour later, two vehicles, a black BMW X5 and an Audi Q7, which were at Mapisa-Nqakula's home arrived at the Lyttelton police station and left after spending 35 minutes there. She is expected to make her first appearance in court on Thursday after being charged.
Late on Wednesday, Mapisa-Nqakula submitted her resignation letter to Acting Speaker Lechesa Tsenoli and claimed that she decided to resign to allow all legal processes to unfold, however, she emphasised that her resignation was not an admission of guilt. "Today I have submitted to the Acting Speaker my letter of resignation as both Speaker of the National Assembly and as the Member of the National Parliament of South Africa. The resignation is effective immediately. I have made this conscious decision in order to dedicate my time and focus to deal with the recently announced investigation against me by our country's law enforcement agencies," She added,"Given the much-publicised allegations against me, I cannot continue in this role. I believe that in the right time, I will have the opportunity to thoroughly address these allegations as and when they have been formally brought against me," she said.
