Five arrested in Gqeberha mass shooting

The house were six people were shot dead is suspected to be a drug den

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with a mass murder that took place at KwaNobuhle township in Gqhebhera. The suspects, aged between 21 and 34 -years old were arrested in Kwanobuhle and Arcadia in Bethelsdorp respectively.


 SHOOTING IS DRUG-RELATED


It is alleged that at about 19h40 on Tuesday, three unknown men entered a yard at Mdledle Street and shot and killed six people, and further injured four others. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the incident is suspected to be drug related. It's alleged that the house where the victims were shot is a drug den. Naidu said the suspects are detained on charges of murder and attempted murder. There has been a series of mass shootings in different townships in Gqeberha. More than 20 people have been killed in the area since January this year. In another incident last week Friday, three people were shot dead in KwaNobuhle.


POLICE HAILED FOR MAKING AN ARREST


Eastern Cape police commissioner Major-General Nomthetheleli Mene has commended the dedicated task team assigned to speedily trace and arrest the suspects involved in the shooting. "The task team demonstrated unwavering commitment and exceptional skill in apprehending the perpetrators responsible for these heinous murders and attempted murders. Their tireless efforts, perseverance, and meticulous investigation resulted in the speedy apprehension," Mene said. She added that the police worked day and night since the incident, sacrificing their own comfort and safety, to ensure that the arrests bring solace to the families of the victims. The suspects are expected to appear in the Kwanobuhle magistrate court soon.
