Christmas day will see many families gatherings. This a great chance to catch up with relatives you haven't seen in months. However, these gatherings can sometimes come with a side of alcohol and unsolicited advice on how to act or even critique on parenting styles. So, how do you keep the peace during these festive family meet-ups? Psychologist Sean Naveling gives a few tips:

AVOID TOUCHY SUBJECTS

Avoid discussing controversial topics like politics or other issues that can lead to arguments. Naveling advises that if such topics come up, try to switch gears or keep it light-hearted.

DON'T ENGAGE IN FIGHTS

Make an effort to steer clear of arguments with family. Remind yourself that changing someone's mind is unlikely, and it's not worth it to have the final say.

DON'T BE TRIGGERED

Be conscious of your feelings and avoid letting passive-aggressive or sarcastic remarks get under your skin.

RESPECT BOUNDARIES

No matter how cordial a family may be, family boundaries need to be set to protect one's emotional well-being. Some family members are more intrusive than others, and some might keep asking personal questions in front of everyone. Setting limits on family members commenting on one's body, diet, weight, or even personal life will help avoid arguments and fights.
