Electrical interns amongst deceased in George building collapse

Two of the 33 construction workers whose bodies have been retrieved from the George collapsed building were electrical interns. The bodies of the two female students were retrieved yesterday by the rescue teams. They were part of the interns who were hired to assist with electrical work at the site.


ELECTRICAL STUDENTS 


As of this afternoon, 33 people have been declared dead in the building collapse while 19 are unaccounted for and 12 are recovering in hospitals. George Municipality spokesperson, Dr Michelle Gratz, confirmed that there were two female students that were found in the building collapse. "I can confirm that there are two female students that were doing an electrical internship when the building collapsed. The two female students were from the Africa Private College. Their families have been informed about the tragic incident and we are not in possession to release their names at the moment. We can share with you that they were part of the electricity internship programme where they were supplying their services," she said. The municipality also confirmed that 47 victims have been linked to their families.


"THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT"


President Cyril Ramaphosa also visited the site this afternoon and assured the families of the victims that the government will compensate the victims. "There will be assistance for those who are in hospital to be well treated and those who have to be treated and there will also be compensation that will have to go through various channels at our various institutions," the President said. He also assured the families that the government will do everything to make the situation a lot easier for the victims. "We do not want to increase the burden, the suffering, and the grief that you are going through. We want to be there as government at all levels to demonstrate our compassion,' he said. Ramaphosa who held a briefing with various ministers and Western Cape Premier Allan Winde to get an update on the progress of the rescue and recovery efforts and commended the effort of the teams involved. The President also asked for patience while the investigations into the building collapse are ongoing. "We are a transparent government. We are able to reveal everything as it should be revealed. Let us have a level of patience. I know it is very difficult for those who have lost their loved ones to have that level of patience, but it will take some time for all aspects of this disaster to be properly tied together. I can assure you that the seriousness in which this matter is being dealt with will lead to the truth coming out,'.
