They are one of South Africa's most powerful music industry couples. Mthokozisi 'DJ Tira' Khathi and his wife Gugu Khathi have been married for almost 10 years and have built a solid foundation as a couple and a brand. The couple recently exposed alleged witchcraft attempts on their lives by a former family friend, whom they have not named. DJ Tira's cousin, Thabile Khathi, has validated their allegations saying, this has gone on for long enough.
Tira confirmed that there has been some dubious behaviour by the said friend since 2017. He said that the friend has been bewitching Gugu as she wanted to be her only friend. Tira also shared screenshots of conversations between the friend and another person where the friend asks them to manipulate Thabile so she can have Gugu all to herself. The friend was complaining that Gugu was no longer going to events with her because of Thabile. In the email, the friend also talks about how she was cooking for Tira and Gugu and that she wanted to put muti in their food so they could like her more. His cousin Thabile says she can no longer keep it a secret and needs to expose the friend. "It has bothered not only me but my family and friends for the longest time. A close family friend has been practicing distinctive forms of witchcraft and magical powers to destroy everyone," she said. "Death threats have been sent out. I'm scared for my life, but I will not be silenced,".
In one of the screenshots messages from the alleged former friend asked a person named Madzi ,whom Tira said was a sangoma, if the person could send their 'creatures' to make a catastrophe at Tira's event Fact Durban Rocks on 31 December. "You know what happened to one of the rappers in the United States? He had a big following like Tira and he had a concert. There were a lot of people that died and got hurt. I think it was called Astroworld. I just asked Lasi now. He will be disgraced and lose all his sponsorship, people will not support his shows again," the message reads.
Sangoma and medium Gogo Mbatha tells ZiMoja that witchcraft exists and can be dated back to many centuries ago. "But witchcraft starts in the mind. One can bewitch you with your thoughts and through actions, he says. We are spiritual beings, if you can manifest good, you can do so with the bad. However, there is also medicinal or herbal witchcraft that requires the physical," he says. Gogo Mbatha says that witchcraft can also be reversed and stopped or prevented, depending on one's beliefs.
