For four weeks in a row, young men have gone missing for a day or two before their bodies are found dumped in open fields around Durban in KwaZulu Natal. Now the communities around the city are concerned and ask themselves who is next?
KILLED AND DUMPED
Recently ZiMoja published a story about Siyanda Shazi who was a student at the Durban University of Technology who went missing. His body was later found dumped at sea. Shazi's incident was followed by the murder of Nkosinathi Mkhize who was killed and no one wanted to talk about what happened to him. On Monday, two young men, Nqobani Makhathini from Dassenhoek and Ndumiso Ngongoma from Mzinto outside Durban were found murdered and their bodies were dumped in an open field. The car Nqobani was driving is still missing. Makhathini's sister, Samke, said that her brother disappeared on Saturday night shortly after he had closed the tuckshops he was running in the area. "My brother is well known around ekasi and on the day he disappeared, he was chilling with his friends after the funeral of one of his friends. He came home later that day, took his keys to go close his tuckshops as per his routine. That was the last time we saw him,". She said when they noticed that he did not come back the previous night, the family called him. But his phone was off until they were called and told his body had been found. "Nqobani was a people's person and we have no clue who might have killed him in this manner and why. We are in the dark and we are praying that the cop find his killers soon," Samke said.
BEATEN AND SHOT DEAD
In a separate incident, Ndumiso Ngongoma was found beaten and shot dead in the head after he went missing on Saturday night. According to Ndumiso's brother Xolani, the family was still trying to come to terms with his murder. "To be honest, we are clueless about what really happened to Ndumiso. My brother had so many friends and we cannot conclude who he was with on the night he went missing. I received a photo on WhatsApp of a body that was found and I immediately knew that it was Ndumiso. We identified the body yesterday and it is definitely him. We need answers," said Xolani. KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed Nqobani's murder. "Mariannhill police are investigating a murder case following an incident in which a 26-year-old was found dead on 22 May. The victim was found lying under a tree with burn wounds," he said.
