After almost a year of the position being vacant, Johannesburg Speaker Margaret Arnolds has welcomed advocate Nolitha Ntebe's appointment as the city's new integrity commissioner. Ntebe will oversee the conduct of officials in the metro and takes over the position following the death of Daniel Rampai in September, who previously occupied the position.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Speaking on behalf of Arnolds, Vusimuzi Gumbi, said the integrity commissioner position is critical. Gumbi said the commissioner's role is to hold accountable and ensure to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and transparency within the city's administration. "Councillor Maragret Arnolds believes this is of paramount importance in making Johannesburg a world-class African city and making sure that accountability and transparency become the order of the day. Councillor Arnolds wishes advocate Nolitha Ntebe all the best in her new role as she becomes the city's integrity commissioner."

FUNCTIONS OF INTEGRITY COMMISSIONER 

The integrity commissioner may, on their own accord, investigate any alleged violation of the code of conduct by any councillor in so far as such violation relates to the disclosure and declaration of financial interest by the councillor. Should the integrity commissioner find evidence of a violation, they must report the facts and conclusions to the ethics and disciplinary committee of the council. Ntebe is an experienced legal compliance manager with a demonstrated history of working in the law enforcement industry. She is skilled in lecturing, customer relationship management, labour relations, and management. She is also a legal professional who graduated from the University of Fort Hare, Wits, and Milpark Business School.
