Chris Hani's killer to be deported back to Poland

Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus will be deported today

Chris Hani's killer, Janusz Walus will be deported back to his country, Poland, today. This was announced by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni during a media briefing on Walus's parole status. Walus was granted parole in 2022 after serving 28 years in prison for the assassination of the former South African Communist Party leader at his home in April 1993.

PAROLE PERIOD ENDED

Ntshavheni confirmed that Walus's parole period ended today and that since Janus Waluz no longer holds South African citizenship, the Department of Home Affairs will be deporting him. Walus held dual citizenship for both South Africa and Poland from 1986 to 2017 when his South African citizenship was revoked. When he was released on parole in December 2022, the then Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, granted Walus permanent residence to serve his parole for a period of two years. "This morning, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services will formally hand over Janus Waluz to the Department of Home Affairs for deportation,' Ntshaveni said. She added that the handover and deportation process is being overseen by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) following a Cabinet briefing earlier this week.

HANI'S FAMILY INFORMED

Ntshaveni said that Cabinet assigned herself, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, to visit the family of the late Hani to inform them of the developments. In a statement this morning, the SACP confirmed that together with Hani's family, they met with the three ministers and Mashatile and called for an inquest into Hani's death. "Our stance remained resolute; both the convicted assassins should have rotted in jail. We demanded full disclosure of the truth about Hani's assassination. To achieve this, we opposed both amnesty and parole for the convicted assassins and called for an inquest into Hani's assassination towards closure for the family," the family said in a statement. Ntshavheni acknowledged that they received the request and that it has been referred to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. Home Affairs Minister Schreiber, confirmed that Walus will be deported today and that South African taxpayers will not be paying for the convicted murderer's deportation. "The Polish embassy has indicated that they will carry the costs of the deportation," he said.
