Chief Justice Raymond Zondo announces date for the first sitting of the National Assembly

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has announced the date for the first sitting of the National Assembly. The gathering has to happen within 14 days of the release of the election results, which were released on Sunday, 2 June. Zondo's declared this coming Friday as the day.

THE INTERDICT

This comes after the Umkhonto weSizwe Party filed an interdict against sitting of the National Assembly this morning.

The MK Party wants the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to attend to their grievances over the recent elections which include vote rigging allegations.

The new kid-on-block wants the sitting to be halted until their vote results case is attended to.

BOYCOTT

The MK Party recently announced that it was going to boycott the sitting because it was dissatisfied with the results.

Parliament CEO Xolile George announced on Monday that he was cancelling all the flights and accommodation for the MK MPs to prevent fruitless expenditure.

In terms of provinces and the NCOP, the judges-presidents in their respective provinces will determine the first sittings of the provincial legislatures.

These will also need to take place within 14 days of the election being announced and will see the Speaker and Premier elected.
